mY why
In February of 2019 I started working towards earning my Eagle Scout rank. I was ecstatic that girls were finally allowed to participate in the BSA and progress to the rank of Eagle. Most of all, I was excited to help my community through the Service Project. But I really wanted to do something that was close to my heart and important to me.
My older brother is gay, and a large motivator of why I chose Suicide Awareness and Prevention of LGBTQ+ individuals through family and community acceptance, to be my project. According to the Trevor Project, "LGBTQ+ youth are almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to heterosexual youth. And LGBTQ+ youth who come from highly rejecting families are 8.4 times as likely to have attempted suicide as LGBQT+ peers who reported no or low levels of family rejection."
